The late Sri. G. R. Govindarajulu, Founder of GRG Trust, following the footsteps of his illustrious parents, started a high school for girls in 1956 in Peelamedu, Coimbatore. It had a growing popularity in this area and it was the earnest desire of all the distinguished visitors and the public that the school should blossom into a full-fledged college for women. Thus PSGR Krishnammal College for Women was started on 28th June 1963 under the auspices of the GRG Trust, with Sri G.R. Govindarajulu as Founder Trustee and Smt. Chandrakanthi Govindarajulu as Founder Correspondent of the College.
Affiliated to the Bharathiar University, the college is situated in a beautiful campus. Over a period of 55 years it has grown into a full-fledged first grade post graduate-research institution with multi storied buildings, well equipped laboratories, an excellent ever growing library with a good collection of Books, National & International Journals and with an extensive well maintained play ground and Sports Arena. The college offers 10 UG and 4 PG Courses under the aided scheme and 2 UGC sponsored courses, 20 UG, 9 PG and 1 PG Diploma under the unaided scheme and M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in 13 disciplines. The total student strength is around 8000.
The Institution was awarded with “College of Excellence” status by UGC in 2016 and secured 22nd Rank among all the colleges in the country by National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2019, Ministry of HRD, Government of India. All the five Science Departments and three Computer Science Departments have been granted star status by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
